Charles' father, King Charles I, was executed at Whitehall on 30 January 1649, at the climax of the English Civil War.
England became a republic with Oliver Cromwell defeating Charles to a 9 year exile. After Cromwell's death the monarchy returned. Charles acknowledged 12 children by mistresses. |
