Abraham Van Nuyssen Janssen(s) (b. 1567 Antwerp - 1632 Antwerp)

Son of Honorious Janssen and Breckie Colet de Rapallje. Honorious was also a historical painter.
Abraham was a Flemish historical, mythological and religious painter. His works are on view in the Antwerp Museum, the Vienna Gallery, the NYC Metropolitan Museum of Art and other well known galleries.
He was known for large paintings based on the sculpture and art of Michelangelo and Raphael.

Janssen was the best historical painter of his time. Janssen and Rubens were rivals. Abraham was better in accuracy; in composition and nudes he was the equal of Rubens. But in colour and touch he was inferior. Janssen was commissioned to paint Scaldis and Antwerpia for the Antwerp Town Hall. The sharp contrast between light and dark was Caravaggio's style, he had a great influence upon many of the artists of the time.

The Crossbowmen, a defense guild that fought in war, and led parades in times of peace commissioned the painting "Peace and Plenty binding the arrows of war". The painting was to celebrate the Crossbowmens' activities. Antwerp had been fighting Spain in the Eighty Years War. The crossbowmen had to defend the Town Hall in 1576, but it got burnt. They rebuilt the hall in a truce.
