Personal Notes:
My father struggled to complete grade 8. The nuns insisted that he write with his left hand. Harry was a baker. At 14 he was sent to work in Germany as a slave labourer. In 1941 working for Hagenaars (see references) as a pastry apprentice; he introduced his sister Jo, to the boss' son, Co. Met Lou in 1946 while working at Beune Confiteur. Harry worked there until 1948. This was the second best pastry shop in Amsterdam. The bakery was within a block of Jakob Van Lennepkade. KLM 1948-1960 - Employees could only transfer to Indonesia if they were not married. Shortly after Harry & Lou were married , Harry left to go to Indonesia. The first night of the marriage, Lou went back to stay with her parents until she could come to Indonesia... ..shortly after Harry arrived in Djakarta he said to management "Oh by the way I am married now." They lived in Indonesia & had Theo there. All Dutch nationals were ordered to leave the country because of political unrest resulting from independence. They moved back to Amsterdam after I was born. We lived at Jacob Van Lennepkade. A row of old townhouses that lined a canal. By November 1952 we moved to Aart Van de Leeuw Straat in Amsterdam. It was bitterly cold and Pap loaded up a rented "bak fiets" to cut and lay tiles in the hallway of our new suburban townhouse in Slotermeer. We lived close to a newly created canal. The other end was a reclaimed area that included swimming beach, fishing, boating and a lock system. During that time it was the greatest treat to be taken to KLM kitchens and dining areas where my father was one of the chefs. In 1959 Pap and Mam visited Theo & Rita for the Christmas holidays. By August we had moved to Chatham, Ontario. During those years Harry was the chef at Chatham General Hospital. August of 1967 we moved to Windsor. Chef, worked at Mario's, Hiram Walker, and Essex Golf and Country Club. During that time he and Lou divorced. He married Chris, they retired in 1988 spending their winters in Lake Okeechobee, Florida. Summers were for North America in their Volkswagen Westphalia camper. He is buried at Block - J - 612 - C at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens Highway # 3, Windsor.o
